Again OP didn’t ask who was mourned more. Unless that’s what you take “bigger” to mean. I think MJ was quite a bit more popular globally. Unlike some other music stars, he was quite popular for a long time as is his music.

I see no difference. How "big" a death something was depends on the global reaction. And mourning is the scale that I think should be used. What else would it connote? Who was the richest to die? Who died in the craziest fashion? Whose death received more media coverage?

MJ might be a figure I should steer from because you are correct on that. No one was more globally popular in the entertainment.

So yes bigger to me in this sense is how much it affects the country. It isnt JFK or MLK scale, but it was a huge punch to the gut for most of us. It was damn near unfathomable for a few minutes. Guy was ready to take the next steps post NBA. And he was.
