You have to ask yourself how recognizable was he? I could take 100 people in my neighborhood. 50 will know both Steve Jobs and Kobe. All 100 will know Kobe. Robin William's death was awful, but he had lived a full life. And youth were not aware of him like Gen X and Boomers were.

Kurt Kobain affected a nation of 14 to 30 year olds. My parents and your parents and grandparents didn't get it. Plus, he wanted to die.

2Pac was huge, but media was a turtle then.

Michael Jackson...say what you want about his legacy, but to a lot of people, it was tainted. Kobe may have cheated on his wife. But he didn't have relations with young boys.

My answer? I do not know. But the reaction from this nation is very strong. Only Jordan and Tiger and Lebron would get a bigger reaction of mourn in the athletic community.

Again OP didn’t ask who was mourned more. Unless that’s what you take “bigger” to mean. I think MJ was quite a bit more popular globally. Unlike some other music stars, he was quite popular for a long time as is his music.
