I think we’re a little obsessed with what we gave up. And there’s also an element of new world insecurity at work.
Americans are crazy about occupational titles for example. Be it sheriff or president. We place great value on them, and we work awfully to hard to attain them.
And unlike in Europe, we continue to use them as honorifics, even after the individual has left office.
So a president will always be Mr. President, even if it’s been twenty years.
Europeans don’t do that. And I think it speaks to our need to prove ourselves. And the way we look back at Europe we left behind as a model.
Do you remember that photo of Obama bowing to the Saudi monarch?
New England was very anti monarchal, but the ante bellum south had a feudal class structure.

Very true, but I sense a shift. It seems the younger generations don’t care as much about people’s job titles as previous generations. It’s all so silly, really

Partly because of its political economy was oriented around agriculture.
