North Dallas area is fully developed with nice neighborhoods and good public schools.

What is the furthest from downtown I should look? I've heard that the traffic coming from the northern suburbs is insane.

It is. I work downtown and have a co-worker who commutes in from Plano (roughly 20-25 miles) and it routinely takes an hour. Garland and Richardson aren't quite as bad.
