It is also a bottom line game. If Brees asks for enough where the team cannot land a decent #2 and some OL help and he has a mediocre year his value as a spokesman is affected. So there is a balance to be had. Anthony Davis took far less money to play for the Lakers because he calculated his outside income would increase.
