I was in a union because I was forced to join to get the job. I was there for 5 years then went non union. I noticed that the non union life is more positive, we can do it, team oriented lifestyle. The union was very individualized and the big believers only talked about rules, clauses, etx. It was very frustrating. The negatives are that it promotes mediocrity, not excellence. They can also control your life/career. The thing I hated most were seeing the scumbags who represented me, and they milked dues from me. That was when I knew I was in the wrong place. Advantages include providing additional training.

Private pays more but you are challenged tenfold. Expectations are high. More stress....looks better on a resume. More positive minded people.

The union I’m in usually goes back to fix non union work. I got a call for a job when I got there was told we had a week left. So I’d if non union start all over. Being in the union I got the next job. It has its benefits. As far as dues, I pay 5% of my check and 43 a month. It’s better than what non union makes in my area. To make money, the option is to go on the road. Either way union makes more from what I’ve experience.
