It prevents a situation like 2004 Auburn. Clemson would have been left out this year without any sort of playoff system. Could you imagine an undefeated, reigning NC not getting a chance to play that game? So, it does serve a purpose. Especially this season with three undefeated P5 champions. A 1-2 bye, 6 team playoff could work. I think Clemson/Oregon and Georgia/Oklahoma would have been entertaining games. Rotate through the NY6 bowls with 1 being left out every year to serve it's original purpose. Or just demote the Cotton Bowl or Fiesta Bowl.
