The rangers don’t do as great a job of keeping the gators out of the spillway pond as they used to
the front ponds are basically gator free..... further from the river in the deeper ponds are where the gators are.... they are gettting heat to cull more though.

Those front ponds designated as dog training ponds are definitely the safest. I still always wait around for a while to see if one pops up before putting my dogs in though. I had a very close call one point before the most recent opening. I have also been out there at night, and it would shock you at the amount of red eyes you see in those ponds. The majority I have seen in there are babies, but you just have to be aware.

My uncle used to be one of the top civilians in the corps. He was a great help in getting the rangers/nuisance trappers to come out there to remove them from those ponds any time I would ask. I have definitely seen an increase in larger gators in the dog training ponds since he has retired. The most recent time I was out there was two days before the Coastal Zone opener and did not see any.
