The economy is also more complex. You need more education and training to make an economic contribution in 2019 than you did in 1979. While there are still cases of people doing well for themselves with nothing but a high school diploma, the number of people who can pull that off continues to decrease because the opportunities are just not there. Employers need educated employees now more than ever before and that trend shows no sign of ending.

That training is not necessarily a 4-year college degree and many Millennials have gotten worthless (non-STEM) college degrees, but that doesn't negate the underlying phenomenon.
