David Brooks, of all people, has written about this. But things when to hell when we created this meritocracy after WW2.
The old ruling class went out the door, and they were replaced by this venal class of graspers. People that weren’t particularly well educated, and had zero sense of a common good. They were simply in it for themselves.
The old elites were far more competent, and because they had largely been in power for several generations, they looked at politics as an obligation, not as a source of prestige or wealth.
