Assuming they remain tied (which I bet they won't be after today) one of them has to drop out to prevent the Democrat in the runoff from winning. I'm sure after thousands of dollars spent and months of campaigning neither one just wants to just happily walk away. Thus, if you are going to walk away it would behoove you to get some political capital out of it.

The dumb part was letting this leak to the media. But I see nothing wrong with each leveraging their position for a potential walk away
