If the kid had an allergy it's likely that would have been the wording used.
The parents probably chose this for the child. I don't know a single toddler who knows what being a vegetarian is at less than 2 years.

Possible but I would say that my kid has a food allergy versus saying my baby decided to be a vegetarian.
