quote:

Orgeron had his defensive linemen execute what he called a "cage rush," in which the linemen bull rush their blockers to box in the opposing quarterback. Chaisson was also sent off the edge to jam another blocker into the pocket, creating pressure on the quarterback.
O called the "Cage Rush" a failure in his post-game interview (and he seemed pissed about it).

As I understand it, the cage rush is a containment tactic. The rushers make no attempt to break away from the D-linemen they engage with. Instead they form a "cage" that is designed to keep the QB from escaping out of the pocket.

Any D-Line guys out there that can put a finer point on this attempt at a description?

Buckeye Jeaux:

I was just about to post the same thing you posted. I think you are 100% correct. I think Chaisson's comments before the game about Sam Ehlinger being more a threat getting out of the pocket and having the run/pass option and Ehlinger being more of threat of a runner sort may have tipped off the LSU defensive game plan. The Cage rush was the plan with the thought that they did not think Ehlinger could beat them as a pocket passer.

Not to look ahead to next year but when Texas comes to Baton Rouge, scrap that "Cage rush" game plan. Ehlinger is a baller and can throw the ball from the pocket.

Orgeron did seem upset when discussing the failure of the cage rush defense. All Tiger eyes are now on LSU’s defense, we know the offense has the killer mentality. Fixing this current defense is the difference between LSU winning and losing a national title.
