Neither Michelle nor Barack "grew up poor."

Having to work for a living does not make you poor. Almost certainly, that makes you middle class.

Poor is government assistance. Two parents working (like Michelle, for sure)? Middle class.

Her story is intriguing because of the complex layers, certainly. She (and her brother) going to Princeton at a transitional time for the country, her diverse ethnic/racial background (e.g., she has a cousin who is a black rabbi), but she did not "come up hard" or "grow up poor."
