quote:

When the National Collegiate Athletic Association was interviewing basketball players from Louisiana State last year as part of its investigation of the school's recruiting practices, someone else intended to listen. That someone was Bob Brodhead, the L.S.U. athletic director, who admitted in Federal Court that he had bugged his office to eavesdrop on the conversations. Yesterday, Brodhead, who agreed to plead guilty to charges of a misdemeanor count of conspiracy to intercept radio communications, was fined the maximum $1,000 and sentenced to perform 200 hours of unspecified community work by Judge John Parker, who told Brodhead that ''playing by the rules of the game is the minimum to be expected of a person in your position.''

Acting on an informant's tip, Federal agents last October seized microphones, a tape recorder and a radio transmitter hidden in Brodhead's office, where the interviews had taken place. When the equipment was found, Brodhead said he was attempting to catch a member of his staff who was leaking information to reporters. He later admitted that he intended to listen to an interview of a recruit, Tito Horford. The L.S.U. athletic committee is scheduled to meet Monday to determine if Brodhead should be retained in his job.
