You don't lose territory you haven't gained yet so you can always gain new land until you lose again.
Utah already owned Byu, any future BYU victories should go to Utah

BYU had territory. The territory was conquered by Utah. They then started over and conquered a different territory. Utah didn't conquer that new territory.
You are making a simple concept more difficult than it should be.
