Our elem school only will dismiss kids as "walkers" if they live within 2 blocks of the school, and an adult meets them at the gate to accompany them.
The schools are too afraid of getting sued if something happens to an unaccompanied child on the way home.
The threat to call CPS is extreme, no doubt, and I'd be having a conversation with my school board member about that.
Even on our school buses, they will not let a kid in grades K-2 get off the bus unless there is an adult or older child to meet them at the bus stop. They will let kids in grades 3-5 off the bus to walk from the stop home, but bus stops are no more than a half block away from any house.
We can sit here and say snowflakes, etc, but these schools are scared to death of liability.
