There's way more than that. The NSSF has estimated 10 million but that's been debunked by several polls on how many ARs have been produced and sold since 2008.

Last rough estimate I saw published by the GOA was more in the 20 million range and that was at the end of Obama's presidency.

Then you take into account the two or three million sold post AWB in 2004 prior to Obama's election and you can easily arrive at a 20 million plus total because prior to 1994 there were already over 1 million in circulation.

Then you take into account over a million Mini 14s have been sold, 3 million AK imports of various flavors, over a million SKSs, and it goes on and on.

The NSSF throttled its overall numbers some years ago when it adopted the slogan "America's Rifle" and coined the term "America's Favorite Sporting Rifle" to offset the "assault rifle" attacks from the left. It was an effort to sacrifice the AK in favor of the AR from a public relations standpoint.

There are also far more than 300 million firearms in the U.S. and they know this because ammo manufacturers have reported sales of common military caliber rounds (various 7.62 and 5.56 and 9mm) in the trillions (not billions but trillions) since 2008. Civilian sales, not government sales and not counting other common hunting calibers or pistol calibers.

More than likely there are over 400 million firearms in the hands of private owners in this country.

We all know people that own a lot of guns, do we not?

Point still taken on the ratio of gun owners to violent crimes committed while using ARs. (Or AKs for that matter.)
