Nah, its a myth. Shortest day in Juneau is about 5.5 hours of sunlight.

It's not a myth, it depends on where you are in Alaska. In Fairbanks in the winter the sun doesn't come up for a month. In Anchorage you get about 20 hours of darkness. Yes it's a gradual thing, both decreasing sunlight and increasing sunlight.

I know it's not pitch black, but those 5.5hrs aren't bright sunlight.
