I understand that they want to portray his character as the goofy, awkward, socially aloof freshman so I can kinda get why he does the nose touch thing occasionally, because it is a goofy, awkward, socially aloof type of thing to do.
What I don't understand is why they during the editing process SOMEONE didn't say "hey, this guy does this thing like 87 times, it's kinda repetitive, maybe let's scrap a few of em"? I mean surely everyone on set had to realize it was way way too overdone.
