I'm not mocking you. Let me say that. But let us consider that the very first season set all of this up as a clandestine experiment to spy on... the Soviets. Things just went really wrong and opened up a gigantic can of worms. It would be a lot weirder for them not to have made an appearance in this show given the setting and background.
You have to have the Soviets show up at some point.

I need to go back and watch season 1.
But Eleven was being developed as a psychic spy/assassin.
She also made extradimensional contact. Which opened the way between their world and the upside down.
The Russians getting info on this go to open their own gate as a way to get an invasion route open/search for resources all that.
Edit: [they can't and Russia ends up developing the mall to further entrench Hawkins as a Derry expy.]

The Russians captured at least one Demagorgon for superscience.
Who knows how many and what else they took.
We also have confirmation that not everything in the upside down is flayed. So there are limits to the Mindflayer.
