Big reason is that I feel the AK is a more reliable platform that requires less battlefield maintenance.

Years after the Vietnam War was over, some American Vets went back looking for soldiers whose bodies weren't recovered. They found a Viet Cong body, decomposed in the jungle heat for years. Underneath was his AK. It fired after being left in the dirt, with a decomposed body on top of it.

There are tons of Youtube videos showing extreme abuse to that platform, and it still fires. That's the gun I want if all Hell breaks loose.

You can find more videos of AK-style rifles that suffer catastrophic failures with only 1500 rounds through them. Unbelievable the amount of mythology spouted off about both platforms and almost none of it based on reality. Unless you are buying a very authentic AK made in a factory that knows what it's doing (read: Not Century Arms, IO, or any number of shops/importers selling junk clones slapped full of cheap 922r compliance parts) chances are you are getting something that will not outlast even the most low-rent PSA AR-15. I have a Serbian AK-clone and while it's a good little plinker my AR-15's are what I'm grabbing if shite hits the fan.
