There is a recent precedent. The Weather Underground.
I remember my father talking about working in politics in that era. He worried about revolutionary sentiment.
You also had the Indian seizure of the Interior Department in that period. For six days in November of 72, they controlled the building.

There were tons and tons of bombings done by groups like the WU in the 60's and 70's but the news media agreed not to cover them for fear it would ignite more problems.
