I could understand if he was an 18 year old incoming freshman with 5 years to develop. But why take a project who can only be there for two years? Makes no sense.

The coaches don't see him as a project, simple as that. Oklahoma offered him too after seeing him in person. Not saying things can't change, if they don't like the trajectory he's on after seeing him play this fall then we may see them back off, but multiple articles from 247 have alluded to the coaches viewing him as a guy who comes in and sees significant playing time from day one.
