There are scientific and medical studies being done on whether or not consciousness can exist separate from the body (which would explain things like reincarnation and out of body experiences)
These studies on are currently being done in the terms of sleep and anesthesia. There is some evidence, mostly anecdotal but also compelling nonetheless

I have read the anecdotal evidence of people being "brought back," saying they saw God, or the light, or that they went fishing with Hitler, but that wasn't detectable or measurable in any way. And nobody ever came back and said "Here, I took this picture" or "God gave me this note." Nobody ever came back with information that could reveal future events.
