The difference is that people aren't eating or drinking processed food/drink for the specific amount of a particular ingredient.
For a supplement to work, it needs not only to be a valid supplement, but to be properly dosed. Proprietary blends camouflage whether the dosing is correct, and in most cases are to shortcut paying money for the real stuff by using inexpensive filler.
