We were in Tuscany at the end of September last year. The harvest festivals in the little towns are a blast and the weather is usually perfect. I'd be more worried about cold reain in November than warmer rain in September. We had no rain at all last September and were able to wear shorts and polos every day.
We also visited the Amalfi Coast and it was very crowded. It's just something you deal with there.
