He can’t choose to be half white but he can choose who he marries. He married a black woman, and because of that black women loved him unconditionally.

I remember when auburn hired gene chizik when the country wanted turner Gil or Charlie strong. Cries of racism were thrown everywhere by the sports media, and it was Charles Barkley who came out and said, because both Gil and strong were black men that married white women, single black mothers (particularly in the south) would not allow their sons to play for them, essentially putting them at a recruiting disadvantage. That comment was eye opening.
