They choose to be 1099 contractors. They can deduct mileage on a schedule C, whereas being a W2 employee they can not deduct the mileage.
There’s a ton of Uber/LYFT drivers making over $85K/yr on the west coast and certain areas of the east coast. Drivers are becoming more greedy, that’s about it.
