This article came out after Smart announced his commitment to LSU in July of 2017. It seems like the call on the wiretap was right before that commitment (and not long after Wade was hired).
It appears that Wade is frustrated having to deal with Froman's demands for Smart. Smart was considered a KY lock, and Froman's association with Calipari was a big part of that. Wade was late to the party, since he had just been hired at LSU.
Wade sniping Smart from Calipari within three months of being hired obviously rubbed some powerful people the wrong way.
