2) Most parents use the idea of a scholarship to justify living vicariously through their children. If they actually cared about their kid they’d promote a broad range of activities to prepare them for life outside of the home, where being well-rounded is valuable and being an average middle infielder isn’t considered

I have had numerous pets (dogs) throughout my life that I was responsible for. It’s basically the same thing.
