the best i can tell, the 2 big, local, exclusive PI firms have been affected a bit. they've been in business forever so they still have a huge client base. they used to print money so they just make a little less now
there are a handful of solo PI firms (who do work in other areas) who haven't been affected b/c they have an established client base (and cover most of their overhead with work in other areas so if PI lags for a few months it's sustainable)
the smaller firms who are known for non-PI work who also dabble in PI have basically lost all of their PI work, from what i hear

Gordon came and got a partner from a local blue blood here when he wanted to get into maritime, and actually one of our associates went to work for him not too long ago. I think you're right in that the established firms will keep their clients, and we've even had some former clients of his that comes to us because they either were not happy with the final numbers or just felt like a tiny part of a much larger machine.
