I am building a wood awning to go over a rear door on my house. The awning will be mounted to a solid brick wall (not veneer) at the top with a ledger board and below with braces/brackets. The braces that will hold up the awning are about 4" thick. Obviously, I have to go all the way through the awning, but how far into the brick should I go if I am going to use a sleeve anchor? Is 6" total length enough to get thru the cedar wood and into the brick good?

How thick are the bricks? 3 5/8" is what you will find on most houses.

So, should I go all the way thru the brick and into the void between the bricks and house framing? Or halfway thru the brick?

Let me get this straight, by saying its not a brick veneer that means its structural brick and a double wythe?

If you have a void between the bricks and the wood house framing. The bricks are most likely a veneer held on with only brick/wall ties. You need to figure out what you got before starting this project.

Yes, thanks for allowing me to clarify. I shouldn't have said veneer. I was using that to specify this isn't some decorative thin faced brick slapped directly on a wall. There is a void between the house framing and the brick wall. The bricks are attached to house sheathing with brick wall ties.

Are you talking about drilling into the face of the brick? If so I wouldn't do that.

If it was me I would put the anchor where the head joint and bed joint meet and use epoxy to secure the anchor instead of trying to use the set tool to flare out the anchor.
