Another vote for NYC. I did similar for a surprise birthday trip for my wife. Direct flight from MSY to EWR and we were out sight seeing before lunch on Friday morning. We were able to get a lot in in just a few days.

Thanks all - very strongly leaning towards NYC even though I know we can’t accomplish it all in 3 days. Hopefully it’s the first of many trips up there for us.
So I’ve gleaned that I need to make sure we fly into EWR. Anyone have any specific properties they’d suggest us staying at and any “must do” activities/restaurants/landmarks? Assuming she will definitely want to see World Trade, but not sure what else she saw on her previous trip to the city.
