I mentioned this earlier, but you have to remember Santiago wasn’t just being disciplined for being a shitty marine, or because “he couldn’t run very fast”.
He broke chain of command and was writing letters asking for a transfer to senior officers, congressmen, and even media at one point saying he had information about violations going on if I remember correctly.
This wasn’t some run of the mill Code Red when Jessup got involved. Him being a rat was actually why they bound and gagged him the way they did, literally shutting him up.
Remember, the montage of Santiago failing at his drills was a voice over of his pleas in his various letters to whoever would listen.
I’m not saying that would absolutely get a commanding officer like Jessup involved, but it at least makes it plausible to set the stage for the story.
