Morata understands the game, and can pass. He's no classic nine, and I doubt Simeone sees him that way.
Maybe, they do center him, and let him act as decoy/dummy and to provide play to Griezmann and Costa.
Costa did it for the Colombian who blew his knee out (his name starts with an R and he went to Monaco, I'm sorry I don't recall his name for the life of me). It worked well.

You have to be able to bring the ball under control to pass it. And his only understanding of the game seems to be to clumsily run at defenders and then fall down when inevitably dispossessed. He's terrible.
