Is this series just as compelling as Game of Thrones?

If you are looking for something as gritty as ASOIAF, then no. It's a different style of book, and very high magic.

At it's peak it is an elite series though, books 3-7 are up there with almost any book series in fantasy. It hits a lull in book 8, books 9 and 10 are straight bad, picks up in book 11, and then Brandon Sanderson finished the series strong in the last three books.

This was THE fantasy series before the GOT Tv series came out. Put it this way: GRRM needed blurbs from Robert Jordan on the cover to help sell his first few books.

But they could not be more different. WOT is much more high fantasy and less “gritty”. Jordan wasn’t trying to subvert the paradigm like Martin.

The first book parallels Fellowship of the Ring a lot, intentionally so. RJ thought he needed that to sell.

It does divert greatly as the series goes on. It has a HUGE number of characters and gets a bit darker as it goes on, while still maintains some innocence. It’s long and sprawling with a lot of deeply developed characters and a very defined magic system.

There’s no cursing, main characters don’t often die brutal deaths. Sex happens in general off page. There are gay characters but it’s sort of hidden at times behind code language.
