I don't know if you have kids, but there is a train you can ride up from Williams, AZ that drops you off right at the South rim and brings you right back. The train station is right in town where they have a real classic Americana, Route 66 vibe going on. We did that with kids and my mom for our first visit to HC and enjoyed it. They do this whole song and dance number on the train for the ride up to the GC. On the way back, they have a bunch of guys on horses that run down the train and "rob" the passengers on the train that was entertaining. It's a slow ride, but great family time and a unique experience.
