I'm not talking net. I'm including the forgotten attorneys working for various government organizations, insurance companies, tax authorities and such.

It's been a buyer's market for legal services, generally, for the entire time I've been licensed to practice. Louisiana, in particular, has a surplus of lawyers, somewhere between 19k and 20k. That puts us just outside the Top 10 in per capita lawyer numbers. The old rule of thumb was you needed between 1 and 2 lawyers per thousand people, and up to 3 was pushing it. Now, D.C. and places like that throw off the average, but they have work available for those attorneys.
Louisiana has over 4 per thousand. And, with such competition it is absolutely hell to try to make living doing it.
