If application of those "critical thinking skills" relates to a mechanical challenge or "some assembly required", I'd guess your prof would underperform. It's not that he's stupid. He is just severely inexperienced (and disinterested) in real world applications.

That disinterest represent a disconnect often separating fantasy from reality.

It's sort of like the manufacturing engineer who fancies himself a design genius. He never actually visits the assembly line, but assumes any problems on the line relate to blue collar ineptitude. Whereas in reality, those blue collar workers have implemented a number of workarounds to render the engineer's design functional.
