I use Trifexis and have never had an issue. Trifexis is a combo of Comfortis and Heartguard, I believe.
Whatever you do, you want something they eat. Not a topical. The meds they eat kill the fleas immediately when they bite. If you give it to an animal that is infested, you can literally see them falling off the same day.
