The P-51 Mustang topic that was posted a week or so ago reminded me of the planes flown by the Forofs. Any of you old timers remember the Corky in his P51 and his dad Bill in his Grumman F8 Bearcat flying out of Houma? That Bearcat had the most awesome sound I've ever heard coming out of an airplane. Here's a clip featuring Bill and his plane. Start at the 1:00 minute mark. LINK

Didn't one of them fly a plane in a Bond movie? Octopussy maybe?

Yes, Corky did. He had this little "Microjet" that he flew through a hanger. I'm pretty sure the Fornoffs were responsible too, for bringing the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds to Houma for airshows. The Fornoffs flew their Mustang and Bearcat planes in those shows.

there was some other guy in the area back in the 80s that had a really nice Corsair and put on a good show, I think he was killed in a welding accident, repairing an old fuel tank that wasn't completely free of fumes or something like that

I think you are thinking of Merle Gustafson. Was a tragic accident for sure. His F4U Corsair, Angel of Okinawa was one of the aircraft used in the TV series Baa Baa Black Sheep. His son, Steve is/was flying with the Aeroshell Flying Team.

Yes I used to see them a lot. They would fly all over a Terrebonne Parish. ( based in Houma). They would practice over the marsh around Lake Theriot and Lake Penchant. They were loud and you could see Mr. Bill’s gold airplane flashing in the sun. I went to school with his kids.

Charlie’s son was in Top Gun. Ricky “Organ” Hammonds. Mr Bill was killed in New Jersey at an air show. Corky was his wingman. One of his other sons was filming.

always get those two mixed up, I guess it was one of our guys in Final Countdown, Hammond's call sign was "Organ" doubt it was for a B-3

It was quite the experience to be sitting in your pirouge fishing in the ponds and have them come roaring over you. Loud and fast. They would give me the frissons.

Fornof video

Growing up, Vividly remember his planes flying over Houma. I miss living in summerfield being in the flight path from the airbase air shows. Heck of a pilot.
