Have you ever heard of Tim Tebow?
Yes, the spread system can work. It worked very well in the SEC, and it is working very well in the SEC. Alabama, Georgia, Auburn and Florida are all running the spread right now, while LSU and Tennessee are running more traditional offenses and falling behind by the year as a result.

Spread =/= up-tempo or no-huddle spread.
There is a difference between Urban Meyer and Chip Kelly and the ways they use the spread offense.
If the no-huddle spread is ineffective, it can cripple your defense, IMO.
