If you want to play the optics game, it is pretty simple.
Give O a 1-year extension at his current salary, his buyout does not get extended in any way. It is based on the original contract.
i.e. if he currently is owed $6 million after this season, it doesn't go up with the new extension year.
If you want to split the last year buyout value over the last two years including the extension, fine I guess.
He should in no way be guaranteed any more money than his original contract however. This makes it just optics.
