This is just a soundbite. It depends on what you mean. You can replace certain beliefs with others but you don't have to replace worship or the belief in a deity just for the sake of it.

I agree with the soundbite, though.
The absence of religion in societies where technology, art, culture, government, social movements etc. have been intertwined with religion creates a vacuum.
I think people feel/will feel that void, religious or not. And I think they'll notice when deeply held beliefs that played a role in hundreds of years of human advancement are replaced with platitudes.
