This is obviously true, and in abstract people can admit as such. However, it is counter-intuitive to one's primary desire for survival. The majority of time, you're going to do what seems to provide the best opportunity to live in the short term. Hence the need for

If it was second nature to challenge someone placing you in a life threatening situation, training wouldn't be necessary.
