The dynamics of the American sports fan are peculiar. We side with billionaires over millionaires in pro sports, coaches over players in college, all while loving the underdog.

Petrino (Falcons) and Spurrier were definitely called quitters when they left in the middle of the season.
Right or wrong, the perception is always going to be different when it happens during the off season as opposed to the middle of the season, for players and coaches.
