I think anyone spending time offshore, or hiking in the back country should invest in a personal locator beacon. Most are under $300.00 and work worldwide using a satellite network. Some have capability to send and receive text messages if you subscribe to the service, for just signaling that emergency help is needed and transmitting your position no subscription service is needed.
