I tip based on quality of service. I recognize that 15% to 20% is the general standard for tipping on good service.

That said, good service is the key word for me.

If you give me good service I will gladly tip 18-20% or more. If you do not, then I won't.

I am especially sensitive to this because like most married posters on here with small kids it is an event to be able to go eat with my wife without the kids.

Maybe a year ago, we went out to a restaurant my wife wanted to try. The service was horrible. The server ignored us the whole time. When our glasses were empty he never came to refill them. I eventually had to go up to the bar to get a refill. He was standing around talking to other servers. He watched me do this, then came over and asked if we needed a refill. Also, he some how managed to only put my wife's order in even though we ordered at the same time.

To be fair, he probably was just incompetent, but regardless, i'm not tipping 20% or at all to not be served. I have definitely had some servers who wanted no part of us because we black though.
