I was backpacking in TN 2 Octobers ago and stepped directly on a fairly large copperhead that blended perfectly into the leaves. It didn’t even think about striking. I picked it up with my hiking stick and moved it well off the trail on onto a big rock to sun.

My experiences with copperheads is that they’re pretty chill. The little ones seem much more apt to strike.

It was likely chill because it was October and cooler. Cooler temps make every snake chill. Don’t assume that to be the norm.
